First Step - Provisional licence.
You can apply for your first provisional driving licence for a car using the (DVLA) secure online service (see link on link page)
or you can apply by completing the D1 application form that is available from the post office. You will also need to enclose original
documentation confirming your identity, a passport style colour photograph and the fee is £34 if you pay online or £43 if you apply
by post (Current Dec 2019).
Send your completed application and payment to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AD or you may be able to use the premium
checking service.
DVLA aims to deliver your licence to you within three weeks of receiving your application. Please allow at least three weeks for your
licence to arrive before contacting the DVLA.
When your licence is issued it will now have a number of added security features, one
of the main differences being a laser engraved black and white photograph.
Please remember you will need to wait for your licence to
arrive before you drive.
If you want to practice your driving with an accompanying driver, the accompanying driver must be over the
age of 21 and must have held (and still hold) a full licence, in the relevant vehicle category, for three years.
